His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, emphasized that Islam is keen on establishing general manners and methodologies for dealing with special needs individuals. This is achieved through the adoption of the principle of solidarity and defining the boundaries of relationships between people to ensure mutual respect and the sanctity of not infringing on others’ rights, highlighting the humanitarian dimension of this noble religion.
This was stated during the meeting between His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and Dr. Heba Hagrass, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Special Needs Individuals, and her accompanying delegation to discuss ways to enhance mutual cooperation.
His Eminence affirmed Al-Azhar’s readiness to introduce a curriculum for primary school students to raise awareness about the rights of special needs individuals and to clarify the correct Islamic approach in this regard. This curriculum aims to refute incorrect views that have deviated from the objectives of Islamic law, mixing common societal customs and traditions of a certain era with the benevolent teachings of Islam, which emphasize good treatment and full empowerment of special needs individuals. His Eminence also stressed Al-Azhar’s interest and care for its students with special needs and its commitment to providing all possible means for their excellence and success.
