The Moroccan Organization for the Rights of Women in Special Needs Situations has called for enabling this group to access all spaces and essential services, including health, education, justice, and social protection, by adopting effective accessibility policies.
In a statement issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8 each year, the organization noted that despite some progress made in the field of women’s rights, women with special needs still face legal and societal obstacles that prevent them from enjoying their full rights. It emphasized that these challenges require urgent measures to ensure their fairness.
The organization stressed that achieving actual equality requires full recognition of the rights of women and girls with special needs, ensuring their inclusion in all political, economic, and social fields. It pointed out that they face dual discrimination based on gender and disability, which limits their opportunities in education and employment, reduces their participation in public life, and restricts their right to live independently and with dignity.
In this context, the statement highlighted the necessity of implementing international commitments, activating the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), to ensure an intersectional approach considering both gender and disability. It also called for amending laws to guarantee full recognition of the rights of women and girls with special needs, especially regarding legal capacity and independent decision-making.
The organization demanded the fight against violence and discrimination against women and girls with special needs by adopting policies and laws that protect and enhance their legal independence, providing effective mechanisms for reporting violations, and ensuring access to justice by facilitating legal environments such as sign language translation services and alternative communication methods in courts and police stations.
Furthermore, the organization urged ensuring the representation of women with special needs in decision-making positions at all levels to strengthen their presence in public policy-making and ensure their voices are heard for their demands and rights.
Additionally, it called for the inclusion of women and girls with special needs in economic empowerment programs such as employment and entrepreneurship, providing financial and social support for mothers with disabilities and mothers of children with disabilities to ensure a decent life for them and their children. It also emphasized eliminating all forms of societal discrimination, whether within the family, workplace, education, or public services, and raising community awareness about the rights of women and girls with special needs.
On this occasion, the Moroccan Organization for the Rights of Women in Special Needs Situations called for turning slogans into actual commitments through legal reforms and tangible measures to enshrine the full rights of women and girls with special needs.
