Dr. Bibi Al-Omari, a consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry accompanying the Kuwait delegation for intellectual disabilities from the Kuwait Special Olympics in the 12th Winter World Games for the Special Olympics 2025, held in Turin, Italy, from March 8 to 15, expressed her pride in participating with the Kuwait delegation in the World Games. She emphasized that this participation represents the nation’s name and a valuable segment of its citizens. Al-Omari added that her role in the “Strong Minds” health program, which focuses on the mental health of athletes, includes several aspects. These involve creating a suitable environment for them, especially since they are not accustomed to snow and extreme cold, as well as examining the impact of being away from home and facing diverse challenges. She highlighted the necessity of this program given the increasing psychological pressures due to the competitions.
She explained that the health program associated with the Special Olympics includes several other areas, such as vision and hearing tests, physical therapy, dental treatment, and mental health, aiming to maintain the mental well-being of participating athletes. She stressed the importance of continuing daily psychological support for athletes to achieve advanced records for the Kuwaiti delegation in the World Games.
It is worth noting that the 12th Winter World Games for the Special Olympics 2025 in Turin, Italy, is the largest sporting event for individuals with intellectual disabilities, with more than 1,500 athletes from 102 countries around the world competing in eight different winter sports, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, futsal, snowshoeing, and more.
