UNESCO: Kuwait Deserves to be the Capital of Arab Culture for Its Leadership Role
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) stated on Wednesday that Kuwait is worthy of being the capital of Arab culture, especially given its leadership role in promoting, preserving, and advancing humanity. Kuwait builds fortresses of peace and prosperity through the exchange of knowledge and experiences for the benefit of all humankind.
This statement was made during an interview with Firmin Edouard Matoko, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations, on the occasion of the launch of the “Kuwait: Capital of Arab Culture and Arab Media 2025” events.
Matoko praised Kuwait’s active role through its various initiatives across multiple large-scale activities, reflecting its leadership in enhancing regional and international cooperation. He noted Kuwait’s support in providing quality education for individuals with special needs, building capacities in the field of world heritage, and youth programs.
Matoko emphasized that Kuwait has shown continuous commitment to UNESCO by enhancing education, culture, science, and information, and supporting the work of the United Nations agency. This commitment is evident in the cultural sector through the ratification of several key conventions, such as the 1954 Hague Convention, the 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, and the 1970 Convention on the Prohibition and Prevention of the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
He also mentioned Kuwait’s significant support in addressing the aftermath of the Beirut port explosions in 2020 by funding UNESCO activities in the Lebanese capital, which helped revive cultural life, creativity, and cultural production in the context of reconstruction.
