Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya led the Kuwaiti delegation participating in the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Al-Yahya emphasized Kuwait’s commitment and deep respect for human rights principles derived from its religion and constitution, which align with the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and relevant international instruments to which Kuwait is a party.
Minister Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to presenting and discussing its periodic national reports on schedule. He highlighted that Kuwait has established national mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the effective and efficient implementation of its international obligations.
He added that the Kuwaiti government is currently conducting a comprehensive review of the majority of laws that aim to enhance and protect human rights, including those related to empowering women and youth, promoting the rights of individuals with special needs, safeguarding workers’ rights, and combating human trafficking. He noted Kuwait’s readiness to present its Universal Periodic Review before the Human Rights Council in May.
In his speech, the Foreign Minister stated that the world faces a moral and humanitarian responsibility towards the Palestinian people. He emphasized that Israel, as the occupying power, continues its blatant violations of international humanitarian law, the UN Charter, and all UN resolutions, exploiting the absence of deterrence and accountability. More than a year after the war on Gaza, while hopes for an end to the bloodshed remain, Israel continues its military operations and threats to displace Palestinians from their land. He called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in providing international protection for the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights.
