Dr. Heba Hagrass, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Special Needs Individuals, expressed her delight at meeting the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar today. She emphasized her eagerness to enhance cooperation with Al-Azhar in raising awareness about the rights of special needs individuals, given the significant role religious scholars play in influencing people’s opinions and positively changing their behaviors. They also raise awareness of various issues and derive lessons from religious stories and teachings.
Dr. Heba pointed out the importance of highlighting the great and inspiring special needs individuals in Islamic history, showcasing their achievements and the marks they left that contributed to the advancement of their societies. This helps improve the image of special needs individuals, gives hope to their families, and encourages them to invest in their upbringing and empower them with their rights.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Special Needs Individuals stated that the United Nations’ action plan aims to improve countries’ performance regarding disability issues, making them more understanding and aware of these individuals. It also aims to mainstream the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which is one of the most widely implemented conventions in many countries. Additionally, it involves monitoring the affairs of special needs individuals, ensuring their care within the community, implementing inclusive policies, and preparing reports on how to help countries improve their services for special needs individuals.
