Kuala Lumpur: Jasour – News Desk
Malaysian cyclists with special needs suffered severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle that subsequently fled the scene.
According to the “New Straits Times,” a truck driver collided with the cyclists and fled without checking on the athletes who were training in preparation for the ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Four cyclists, including two visually impaired athletes and their guides, sustained fractures in their limbs, as well as multiple fractures and spinal injuries when the truck hit them while they were descending from a hill resort.
Two gold medal candidates for the ASEAN Para Games are in critical condition, especially since the duo represented Malaysia in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year and are now undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The fifth victim, Coach Johari Nayan, fell off his motorcycle but sustained only scratches.
The 42-year-old coach stated, “The driver destroyed us in a split second; I couldn’t imagine this happening.”
He added, “Now we just pray that the injuries are not serious and that the cyclists can return. Our plans for the ASEAN Games have been shattered by this incident.”
The ASEAN Para Games will commence on the 17th of this month, featuring 1,500 athletes from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, competing in 16 different sports.
