The 13th edition of the Sharjah International Paralympic Games kicked off on Sunday, organized by the Al Thiqa Club for Special Needs, with the participation of 181 athletes from around the world competing in 70 diverse events. The Games will run until February 4th.
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, the 13th edition of the Sharjah International Paralympic Games, organized by the Al Thiqa Club for Special Needs, commenced on Sunday, with 181 athletes from various countries competing in 70 different events.
The competitions were held at the Al Thiqa Club for Special Needs’ stadiums, attended by a large number of officials from government departments, Emirati sports clubs, and event sponsors.
Emirati teams showed remarkable performances, with Mohammed Al Kaabi from Al Ain Club for Special Needs winning the gold medal in the discus throw, and Abad Ali from Dubai Club for Special Needs winning a bronze medal in the discus throw.
Mariam Al Zeyoudi from Khorfakkan Club for Special Needs won the gold medal in the shot put, while Mariam Al Matroushi from Khorfakkan Club for Special Needs secured the silver medal in the shot put. Khadija Al Suwaidi from Abu Dhabi Club for Special Needs won the silver medal in the shot put, and Fatima Al Kibali from Al Thiqa Club for Special Needs took third place in the shot put.
Rahma Assem from Al Thiqa Club for Special Needs won the bronze medal in the 100-meter race, category T35/37/36.
Several participants from other countries also achieved advanced positions and won gold medals, including Ali Al Nukhaili from Saudi Arabia in the 100-meter race, German athlete Kathrin Muller in the women’s running category, Australian athlete Samuel Carter in the 100-meter wheelchair race, and Mauritian athlete Anis Alice Angeline in the women’s 100-meter race.
The first day of competitions saw strong competition among the participants, characterized by high spirits and significant challenges. There were thrilling contests in various categories, with many promising names demonstrating their ability to excel, making the running, discus throw, shot put, and club throw events the focal points for the audience, with numerous exciting victories that heightened the overall enthusiasm.
The athletes competed with high sportsmanship, with a notable distinction from Paralympian athletes who delivered close matched levels of excellence across various events, with the introduction of some new names in the competition arena, adding excitement to the Games.
