Primark, the giant low-cost fashion company, has launched a clothing line in the United Kingdom specifically designed for people with special needs. The collection includes approximately 50 affordable products that can be adapted to suit various disabilities. Fashion designer Victoria Jenkins, who has a disability herself, adapted some of the best-selling clothes from the Irish brand, including trench coats, shirts, and jeans, to meet the needs of individuals with special needs or temporary impairments.
Very few major brands offer clothing for people with special needs, who often have to modify unsuitable garments or purchase expensive clothing from specialized brands.
Victoria Jenkins noted that these individuals “face several obstacles in their lives, and clothing should not be one of them.” She added, “We do not want to live in sports trousers and T-shirts, but we often have no other choice.” She explained to Agence France-Press that providing affordable clothing was a priority for her, as people with special needs “are 50% more likely to live in poverty.”
The collection, sold in 31 stores, includes a trench coat with magnetic button pockets, zip-up sleeves, a tied belt, and an adjustable hem. There is also a shorter version for wheelchair users.
