Dr. Walaa Al-Duksh, Professor of Early Childhood Education at Al-Azhar University, emphasized that the family is the first place where parents can discover and nurture their children’s abilities, especially those of special needs individuals. She explained that children in their early stages are highly sensitive to words and situations, making it crucial for parents to encourage and support them positively.
During an interview with media personality Marwa Shatla on the program “The Home,” aired on Al-Nas Channel, Dr. Al-Duksh said: “From the beginning of life, we must know that the child is a precious treasure in the home. If we preserve this treasure properly and focus on nurturing it, it will bring us many benefits. We should not view disability as a hindrance; rather, we should focus on the skills and abilities that the child possesses.”
She pointed out that play is the best tool for discovering children’s skills before school. Through play, it is possible to determine whether a child leans towards drawing, coloring, or even physical activities like sports. She explained that during play, a child easily reveals their inclinations. If they enjoy art or sports, the family should support and nurture these interests.
She added: “The words we use with our children can have either a positive or negative impact. Encouraging words make the child feel proud of themselves and motivate them to achieve more success, while negative words can reduce their self-confidence.”
She stressed that the family is the primary source for discovering a child’s skills. She called on parents to pay attention to observing their children’s behavior and support them in various paths to develop their skills and discover their latent potentials, no matter the challenges they face.
