British media reported that the British Public Prosecution has charged the British Athletics Federation and Keith Davies, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, with manslaughter in the death of Emirati Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Abdullah Hayayei, aged 36, was struck on the head by a metal pole during training at the Newham Center in East London on July 11, 2017. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The report mentioned that Hayayei was injured while training to represent the UAE in the F34 category for discus, javelin, and shot put at the World Para Athletics Championships in London, where a part of the throwing cage fell on him.
On Wednesday, British police and the public prosecution charged Davies, aged 77, with gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety offense.
The British Athletics Federation faces the same charges, according to the British news agency PA Media.
Officials from the British Athletics Federation and Davies are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31.
Abdullah Hayayei was one of the UAE’s champions in his beloved sports, discus, and shot put, since 2011, and he had won numerous medals of various colors.
