Member of the Special Needs Affairs Committee, Eng. Muneera Al-Ameer, stated that the Municipal Council’s celebration of the International Day of Special Needs by inviting them to participate in the special session held by the Municipal Council under the slogan “Built Environment to Empower the Integration of Special Needs into Society,” to discuss proposals and requirements related to this group, considering them as key stakeholders in all civil societies. The session aimed to discuss their needs and issues, and to observe their reactions to the decisions made over the past year to provide suitable mobility mechanisms in public buildings and government facilities.
Eng. Muneera Al-Ameer mentioned that Kuwait has a clear approach to assisting special needs individuals, supported by the humanitarian nature of the Kuwaiti personality with its cultural and social backgrounds, which has also reflected on the official stance. Kuwait has supported the United Nations from the beginning, especially during the launch of the UN Strategy for the Inclusion of Persons with Special Needs in June 2019, to become a model for the world in integrating and utilizing the potential of this important group. Kuwait has been ahead in dealing with them in terms of official and societal inclusion and support.
She explained that the participation of special needs individuals in the symbolic celebration held by the Municipal Council serves as a reminder of these moments, where during the meeting, the mechanisms for implementing the decisions issued by the Municipal Council through its various committees were discussed to ensure that government and public buildings are equipped in the best possible ways to ensure their free movement within buildings and facilities. These are among the most important steps they see and need so they do not feel isolated or have difficulty moving.
She pointed out that the Municipal Council is part of this society, understands its needs, and continuously strives to provide what helps within its available powers. One of these needs is listening to special needs individuals and finding sustainable solutions to continuously serve and support them. This is one of the main goals the council is currently pursuing, and this celebration is a principal part of reminding us of the role we must play to help special needs individuals, integrate them, and involve them in decisions that may affect them in the future.
