The Kuwaiti Special Olympics delegation participated in a regional training camp and workshop for preparing international coaches in snow running and cross-country skiing, organized by the Special Olympics International for the Middle East and North Africa from November 22 to 25 in Cairo. This event is part of the preparations for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, in March 2025.
Fahad Al-Sahli, Assistant Secretary of Al-Tomooh Sports Club, the official representative of the Kuwaiti Special Olympics, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) before departing on Friday that the camp, which includes athletes and coaches from 22 countries, aims to develop training skills and qualify cadres to lead training at a global level.
Al-Sahli added that this camp is an opportunity to refine skills and exchange experiences among the participating athletes, especially in preparation for the upcoming World Winter Games.
He emphasized the Kuwaiti Special Olympics’ commitment to preparing athletes and technical teams to compete in the global forum and to presenting an honorable image of the sports for individuals with intellectual special needs in Kuwait. He stressed the importance of continuing the excellence and international presence achieved by Kuwaiti champions at the World Games held in Berlin in 2023, where they won 21 various medals for the country.
Al-Sahli explained that the training program for athletes started two months ago with physical fitness training followed by practical training at the Marine Sports Club headquarters. He noted that the country will participate in the games with three athletes in snowshoeing and cross-country events.
Al-Sahli expressed his gratitude to the Special Olympics International for the Middle East and North Africa for organizing the camp, and to the official Kuwaiti entities, especially the Public Authority for Sports, Al-Tomooh Sports Club, and the Marine Sports Club, for hosting the training of athletes participating in the Winter Games.
